A Compilation of the Messages and Papers of the Presidents. Volume 6, Part 1: Abraham Lincoln

This is not a biography of Lincoln. It is Lincoln himself, unfiltered and raw. Spanning March 1861 to March 1869, this volume gathers the actual messages, speeches, and papers from the most consequential presidency in American history and the troubled reconstruction that followed. Here you will find the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, the Gettysburg Address in its original context, the urgent telegrams to generals, the letters to a grieving mother, and the final struggle between Lincoln and Congress over the direction of a broken nation. Andrew Johnson's papers follow, documenting the bitter impeachment battle that reshaped executive power. These are not polished history, they are the rough, urgent, sometimes desperate words of leaders navigating an existential crisis. For anyone who has ever wanted to hear Lincoln think aloud, to watch a president argue for the survival of democracy in real time, this compilation offers an unparalleled window into the American soul at its most fractured and heroic.
