A Compilation of the Messages and Papers of the Presidents. Volume 4, Part 3: James Knox Polk

A primary source window into one of American history's most consequential and controversial presidencies. This volume gathers the official messages, papers, and documents of James K. Polk, the 11th President whose single term (1845-1849) reshaped the nation's map and redefined its ambitions. Here are Polk's own words on the annexation of Texas, the bitter Oregon boundary dispute with Britain, and the Mexican-American War that added roughly 500,000 square miles to American territory. The documents reveal a president obsessed with expansion, guided by a strict constitutional interpretation, and determined to fulfill what he called America's 'manifest destiny' to span the continent. This is not narrative history but raw political record: inauguration addresses, annual messages to Congress, diplomatic correspondence, and proclamations that illuminate how the United States transformed from a regional republic into a continental power. For serious students of American political history, these papers offer indispensable access to the mindset and methods of a chief executive who kept his promises with ruthless efficiency, completing every major goal he set in a single four-year term.
