A Class-Book of Old Testament History

Written in the late Victorian era for classroom use, this history of the Old Testament traces the biblical narrative from the Creation through the return of the Jews from Babylonian exile under Ezra and Nehemiah. Maclear, a respected educator, presents the patriarchal narratives, the dramatic Exodus, the monarchy, the divided kingdoms, and the exile with clarity designed for young minds. The prose carries the measured, didactic quality of 19th-century schooling: moral lessons embedded in historical chronology, characters rendered as exemplars of virtue or warning. This is not casual reading but structured study, intended to implant foundational knowledge of Scripture. For modern readers, the book offers a window into how generations of British and American schoolchildren learned their biblical history: through careful sequencing, memorable summarization, and an assumption that religious education shaped character. It remains valuable for educators, students of biblical history, and anyone curious about the educational ancestors of contemporary Sunday school curricula.
