A Civil Servant in Burma

A remarkable document from the twilight of empire, this memoir distills three decades of colonial administration into something far more revealing than any official history. Sir Herbert Thirkell White arrived in Burma in 1878 as a young civil servant and stayed until the eve of the Great War, rising through the ranks of a system he describes with practiced detachment but evident affection. This is not a guidebook to exotic lands or a scholarly treatise on Burmese customs; it is the plain, often candid story of what it meant to govern a province from within. White offers fragmentary impressions of the people he encountered, the landscapes that stunned him, and the daily machinery of British rule. His judgments are explicitly his own, drawn from observation rather than inherited wisdom. For readers curious about how empire actually functioned on the ground, and what it felt like to live inside it, this memoir provides an invaluable portal into a world that has otherwise largely spoken for itself.
