A Christmas Hamper: A Volume of Pictures and Stories for Little Folks

A Christmas Hamper arrives like a small, wrapped gift from 1860, filled with stories and verses meant to be read aloud by firelight. These are not the polished productions of modern children's publishing but something rarer: genuine Victorian voices, unselfconscious and warm, writing for children they actually knew. The mischievous "Very Naughty Little Person" speaks in playful verse about slamming doors and ink-stained fingers with a voice that feels startlingly alive across the centuries. Other tales follow children building snowmen, encountering lost uncles, and learning gentle lessons about manners through the antics of curious cats. The anthology carries no irony, no winking at adult readers. It simply offers what Victorian Christmas books offered: a brief, beautiful pause in which children could be children, and the season meant something more than presents under a tree. For readers who suspect that Christmas has always been better in memory than in practice, this hamper contains the evidence.
