A Christmas Faggot

In late Victorian London, a clergyman gathers his private meditations on the miracle of Christmas. Alfred Gurney, Vicar of St Barnabas' Pimlico, strings these poems together like a faggot of firewood, each verse a small offering meant to burn bright against the winter dark. The collection examines the Nativity through intimate lenses: Mary's quiet wonder, the humble stable, the eternal hope born in fragile flesh. These are not grand theological declarations but quiet, reverent reflections meant for readers seeking stillness amid the Victorian age's industrialized clangor. Gurney weaves pastoral imagery with theological depth, exploring how divine light enters the world through a newborn's helplessness. The language carries that distinctive late-Victorian texture, formal yet deeply felt, ornate without losing its sincerity. For those who find modern Christmas too loud and hurried, these poems offer a return to contemplation.
