A Century of Science in America, published in 1918, commemorates the 100th anniversary of the American Journal of Science, founded by Benjamin Silliman in 1818. This historical account details the evolution of various scientific fields in the United States over the past century, emphasizing the Journal's role in disseminating scientific knowledge. It also discusses the establishment of the Mrs. Hepsa Ely Silliman Memorial Lectures at Yale University, which aimed to illustrate the connection between science and the divine without dogmatic theology, highlighting the limited scope of early scientific literature in the 19th century.
