A Captive at Carlsruhe and Other German Prison Camps

In the winter of 1914, Joseph Lee found himself herded into a repurposed factory in Carlsruhe, stripped of his letters, his possessions, and his freedom. What follows is an unflinching account of life inside German POW camps during the Great War, where hunger gnaws constantly and boredom becomes its own form of torture. Yet this is no litany of suffering. Lee writes with surprising wit and warmth about the strange camaraderie that forms between men who share only their captivity, the improvised meals, the underground networks, the dark jokes that keep despair at bay. His voice is neither heroic nor self-pitying; he simply tells what he saw and endured, and in doing so captures something essential about how people survive the unsurvivable. The book endures because it documents what textbooks rarely capture: not the grand strategies of generals, but the grinding, day-to-day humanity of ordinary men trapped in circumstances beyond their control. Lee's humor is never forced, his pathos never sentimental. He shows prisoners helping one another survive, finding small rebellions against dehumanization, holding onto dignity through sheer stubborn will. This is history from the ground level, intimate and invaluable.
