A Canadian Calendar: XII Lyrics

A Canadian Calendar: XII Lyrics offers twelve precise portraits of the year as seen through northern eyes. Written around the turn of the twentieth century, this collection maps the emotional geography of the Canadian landscape, the brutal awakening of spring, summer's brief indulgence, and the long, contemplative dying of autumn into winter's whiteness. Each poem operates as a kind of emotional weather report, tracking not merely what the seasons do, but what they do to the human heart. The verse carries an aching tenderness. Love appears mostly as memory or absence; companionship as something sought or lost. The wilderness here is not merely backdrop but mirror, reflecting back whatever the poet brings to it. This is Canadian nature poetry before the tradition found its louder voices, quieter, more melancholic, more interested in what is remembered than what is possessed.
