A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia

Published in 1590, this is among the earliest English accounts of what would become America. Thomas Harriot, a mathematician and astronomer accompanying Sir Richard Grenville's expedition to Roanoke, wrote this treatise as a scientific argument for colonization, but what emerges is something far more layered: a window into a moment when two worlds were first colliding through European eyes. Harriot documents the land's resources with systematic precision, silk, timber, minerals, medicinal herbs, yet also offers surprisingly attentive observations of Indigenous peoples, their villages, fishing techniques, and agricultural practices. The text gained enormous visual power through Theodor de Bry's engravings, rendered from John White's watercolors; these 28 images became the defining European vision of America for generations, fixing Native American life in the colonial imagination forever. Harriot writes with the conviction of a man who believed Virginia could be England's gateway to wealth and empire, and that urgency pulses through every page. Yet modern readers find there something Harriot likely did not intend: a fragile, partial, often biased record of peoples and landscapes that were already changing. It is indispensable not as history's verdict, but as history's raw material, a document from the very edge of contact.
