A Brief History of the Worshipful Company of Ironmongers, London A.D. 1351-1889

One of London's oldest surviving institutions comes vividly to life in this meticulous Victorian chronicle of the Ironmongers' Company. Founded in 1351, during the reign of Edward III, this guild of metalworkers rose from humble trade origins to become one of the most powerful and wealthy Livery Companies in the City wielding enormous influence over London's commerce, civic governance, and charitable endeavors. T.C. Noble traces the company's journey across five centuries, documenting its complex relationships with the Crown, its fierce rivalries with other guilds, and its gradual transformation from a working trade association into a ceremonial body. The appendix adds the complementary saga of the Blacksmiths' Company, whose parallel history reveals the often-turbulent boundary between related crafts. Rich with detail on governance structures, election rituals, charitable trusts, and the daily rhythms of medieval and early modern workshop life, this book offers an intimate window into the closed world that built Tudor London and sustained the City through plague, fire, and revolution. For anyone curious about the hidden institutions that still shape Britain's capital, this is an indispensable portrait of power, craft, and prestige.
