A Book of Old Ballads — Volume 4

These are the stories that survived centuries of oral transmission before anyone thought to write them down. Raw, violent, and deeply human, this 1934 anthology gathers traditional English and Scottish ballads that shaped the Western narrative imagination. The collection opens with 'Edward, Edward,' a murder ballad of staggering psychological intensity where a son confesses to his mother that his sword runs red with his father's blood - the original family drama, spare and chilling. Also included is 'King Leir and His Three Daughters,' the brutal tale of paternal betrayal that Shakespeare later transformed into Lear. The volume extends beyond literary ballads to include historical songs like 'John Brown's Body' and 'It's a Long Way to Tipperary,' proving these weren't mere entertainment but the cultural DNA of their eras. Love, loss, betrayal, and moral consequence pulse through every verse. This is folk poetry at its most elemental: no ornament, no protection, just the ancient human impulse to sing about the darkest things.
