A Book for All Readers

Written by the Librarian of Congress who transformed a modest parliamentary library into the nation's greatest repository of knowledge, this late 19th-century guide distills a lifetime of expertise in book collecting, library administration, and the art of curating literature that matters. Spofford believed libraries were not mere warehouses of pages but engines of democratic enlightenment, and his manual offers practical wisdom on selecting volumes that endure, managing collections with foresight, and ensuring the written word reaches every curious mind. Against the backdrop of America's explosive literary growth and the copyright debates of the era, he advocates for comprehensive collecting that transcends personal taste, building collections that serve scholars and casual readers alike. Though written in another century, its core conviction resonates now more than ever: that how we build our books determines what kind of people we become.
