A Beacon for the Blind: Being a Life of Henry Fawcett, the Blind Postmaster-General

Henry Fawcett lost his sight at twenty-five in a hunting accident. Most men would have retreated from public life. Instead, he became one of the most effective Postmasters-General in British history, revolutionizing the postal system and championing reforms that served millions. This 1914 biography by Winifred Holt, herself a tireless advocate for the blind, traces Fawcett's remarkable journey from the son of a Salisbury mayor to a towering figure in Victorian politics. Holt illuminates not merely the public achievements but the private resilience: the years of adjustment, the refusal to be defined by loss, and the fierce intellectual ambition that carried him into Parliament and the heart of government. Written by someone who understood firsthand how society underestimates those it considers deficient, the book serves as both intimate portrait and quiet argument about capacity, prejudice, and what it means to truly see.
