35 Sonnets

In 1918, a young Portuguese poet barely into his twenties assembled thirty-five sonnets that would quietly remake the form. Fernando Pessoa wrote these poems in the aftermath of World War I, when the old certainties about selfhood and meaning had collapsed into rubble. What emerges is a sequence of extraordinary emotional and intellectual range: love poems that ache with tenderness, philosophical fragments that question the very possibility of knowing oneself, and meditations on time that feel genuinely haunted. The sonnets move through solitude and connection, beauty and doubt, the hunger to communicate and the suspicion that language may always fail us. Pessoa had not yet fully developed his famous heteronyms, but the voices here already contain multitudes, a self that fractures, multiplies, questions its own existence. These are poems written in the liminal space between presence and absence, between the desire to be known and the fear that there may be no stable 'I' to know. This is the Pessoa before The Book of Disquiet, the poet in his earliest and most vulnerable incarnation. For readers who have felt the strange pain of not being able to fully inhabit their own lives.
