1914

A commander\'s eye view of the war that reshaped the twentieth century. John French, who led the British Expeditionary Force into France in August 1914, offers an intimate account of the weeks when everything hung in the balance: his meetings at the Committee of Imperial Defence, his consultations with French military leaders, the terrible weight of mobilizing young men for a conflict no one fully understood. This is not history written from distance but from the inside, complete with the author\'s doubts, convictions, and the stark awareness that decisions made in those early days would determine the fate of nations. French writes with the directness of a soldier, not a scholar, making his account of strategic sessions and battlefield preparations feel urgent and immediate. For anyone who wants to understand how World War I looked to the men who fought it, before the trenches hardened into stalemate and the generation was lost, this remains an indispensable primary source.
