琵琶記

Written in the 14th century and crowned as one of China's four great classical dramas, 琵琶記 is a devastating portrait of duty torn between love and obligation. When scholar Cai Bojie passes the imperial examination, he is forced to stay in the capital as an official, leaving behind his newlywed wife Zhao Wuniang and his aging parents. What follows is a tragedy of separation: parents starve as drought devastates the village, and Zhao must bury them with nothing but her own hair and body, selling herself into servitude to honor them. The pipa of the title becomes her voice, an instrument of grief and fidelity. When Cai finally returns, he finds only graves. Yet the play refuses simple despair. Instead, it asks whether any honor achieved at such cost can ever be called victory. This is theater that aches, that refuses easy answers, and that has moved Chinese audiences for seven centuries.
