William H. Herndon

William H. Herndon was an American lawyer and politician, best known for his close association with Abraham Lincoln. Born in Kentucky, Herndon moved to Illinois, where he became a prominent figure in the legal community and eventually partnered with Lincoln in his law practice. Their collaboration lasted for nearly two decades, during which Herndon not only contributed to Lincoln's legal work but also became a confidant and friend. After Lincoln's assassination, Herndon dedicated himself to preserving Lincoln's legacy, conducting extensive research and interviews with those who knew the former president. Herndon's most significant contribution to Lincoln's legacy was his biography, "Herndon's Lincoln," published in 1888. This work was groundbreaking as it provided a more personal and nuanced portrait of Lincoln, drawing on firsthand accounts and Herndon's own insights. Despite facing criticism for its candid portrayal of Lincoln's flaws, the biography became a crucial resource for historians and remains influential in Lincoln scholarship. Herndon's efforts to document Lincoln's life and character helped shape the public's understanding of the 16th president, ensuring that his legacy would endure for generations.
