Juvenal, Persius , Martin Madan

Juvenal and Persius were two prominent Roman satirists whose works have significantly influenced the genre of satire in Western literature. Juvenal, known for his biting social commentary, wrote a series of sixteen satires that critiqued the moral decay and corruption of Roman society during the late first and early second centuries AD. His sharp wit and keen observations on topics such as politics, social class, and human vice made his satires a powerful vehicle for social critique. Notable works include 'Satires' where he famously coined the phrase 'bread and circuses' to describe the superficial appeasement of the populace by the state. Persius, a younger contemporary of Juvenal, is known for his more philosophical approach to satire. His work, 'Satires,' reflects Stoic ideals and critiques the moral failings of his time, employing a more complex and dense style than Juvenal. Despite having written only six satires, Persius's influence on later satirical writers is profound, as he emphasized moral integrity and the importance of self-examination. Together, these authors laid the groundwork for future satirical literature, inspiring countless writers and thinkers throughout history. Martin Madan's translation of their works, 'A New and Literal Translation of Juvenal and Persius,' further contributed to the accessibility and appreciation of their sharp insights and enduring relevance in the study of literature and society.
