James H. Sterrett

James H. Sterrett was a prominent army officer during the early years of the United States, known for his service in the Northwest Indian War under General Anthony Wayne. Born in central Pennsylvania around 1764, he played a significant role in the transfer of the Natchez District and Louisiana to the United States, becoming acquainted with key figures of the territorial period, including General James Wilkinson. His military career was marked by involvement in notable controversies of the time, such as the Burr conspiracy and the tumultuous business dealings between Wilkinson and Daniel Clark. After resigning from the army around 1805, Sterrett transitioned into a business career, becoming an editor for the Louisiana Gazette and engaging in cotton trading. He partnered with John Clay, brother of the famous politician Henry Clay, in a commission merchant firm. Sterrett's dedication to service was evident when he volunteered for the defense of New Orleans during the War of 1812, where he sustained injuries in battle. In 1820, he was appointed as an external revenue officer at the New Orleans Customs House, a position he held until his death in 1825. Sterrett's life reflects the complexities of early American military and political life, as well as the burgeoning economy of the Mississippi River Valley.
