D. W. Griffith

D. W. Griffith was a pioneering American film director, producer, and screenwriter, often regarded as one of the most significant figures in the early history of cinema. Born in 1875 in rural Kentucky, Griffith began his career in the theater before transitioning to film in the early 1900s. He is best known for his groundbreaking work on the silent film 'The Birth of a Nation' (1915), which, despite its controversial themes and portrayal of race, showcased innovative narrative techniques, including cross-cutting and close-ups, that would shape the future of filmmaking. His subsequent film, 'Intolerance' (1916), was an ambitious attempt to address social injustices across different historical periods and is celebrated for its elaborate production and storytelling.

“In the year 2024 the most important single thing which the cinema will have helped in a large way to accomplish will be that of eliminating from the face of the civilised world all armed conflict. Pictures will be the most powerful factor in bringing about this condition. With the use of the universal language of moving pictures the true meaning of the brotherhood of man will have been established throughout the earth.””
