Biblia Sacra Vulgata

The Biblia Sacra Vulgata, commonly known as the Latin Vulgate, is a late 4th-century Latin translation of the Bible that became the standard version of the Scriptures for the Roman Catholic Church. Commissioned by Pope Damasus I and translated primarily by St. Jerome, the Vulgate was intended to provide a uniform text for the Latin-speaking Christian community. Jerome's work was groundbreaking, as it was one of the first translations to draw directly from Hebrew texts, rather than relying solely on the Greek Septuagint, which had been the primary source for earlier translations. The Vulgate's influence on Western Christianity and literature cannot be overstated. It served as the basis for many subsequent translations and interpretations of the Bible, shaping theological discourse and biblical scholarship for centuries. The Psalms, as featured in works like "Psalmi XXII," exemplify the poetic and spiritual depth of the Vulgate, which has been revered for its literary quality as well as its religious significance. The Vulgate's legacy endures, as it remains a critical text for understanding the development of Christian thought and the history of biblical translation.
