Agnes Smith Lewis

Agnes Smith Lewis was a pioneering Scottish biblical scholar and one of the first women to gain recognition in the field of textual criticism. Born into a family of scholars, she was educated in an environment that encouraged intellectual pursuits, which laid the groundwork for her future contributions to biblical studies. Alongside her twin sister, Margaret, Lewis embarked on a series of significant expeditions to the Middle East, where they discovered and studied ancient manuscripts, including the important Syriac version of the Gospels. Their work not only advanced the understanding of early Christian texts but also highlighted the role of women in academia during a time when such contributions were often overlooked.
