The film's plot revolves around a feud between two Polish gentry families living under Russian rule. Vengeance, thwarted love, lusty trysts, mind-boggling secrets, feasts, hunts, balls, and battles enliven the action, which unfolds amidst the Poles' hope that Napoleon's invasion of Russia will lead to the restoration of Polish statehood.
