The Holy Spirit must have had all the Angels of all the cardinals in the conclave whisper in their ears that what the Church needed at this time and place was a diplomat, a man who could appease the powers of Europe, who could ward off an all out attack on the Vatican and the Church. That man was Gioacchino Vincenzo Raffaele Luigi Pecci, forever to be lovingly known as Pope Leo XIII.
