Pablo, a blind boy who falls in love with his guide Marianela - an orphaned, poor and deformed young girl - is handsome, amiable and the son of a wealthy family. When Doctor Teodoro Golfín comes to their mining village to try and restore Pablo's eyesight, Marianela is torn between joy and fear. Galdós (1843–1920), the leading Spanish realist novelist of his time, tells an emotionally complex story reminiscent of "The beauty and the beast".
