Under the Government of India Act of 1858 a ministerial office was instituted known as the Secretary of State for India in Council. The despatch was the most formal means of communication between London and its governments in India. Despatches sought or provided information, asked for advice, and explained the British government's policies. This set of fiche consists of 'out' despatches only.
