The author examines this question using Sirens as a paradigmatic case, moving from Schelling and Cassirer to arrive at the positions of Creuzer, Jung and Hillman. Myth is thus viewed as a representation of the soul, and philosophy offers its important mediating function between the rich symbolic legacy of the past and the tumultuous interior world that still moves all of us today. --
