When it comes to heraldry, the role of the artists has been neglected for a long time. Who produced artistic representations of heraldry? Who conceived them, who executed them? Did heraldic artwork need dedicated specialists, or was its production part of the everyday business of artists, artisans, and painters? What importance was assigned to these productions, and what heraldic knowledge and culture was necessary to do so?
