About this book
This study contains county-level electoral returns for selected general and primary elections in eleven southern states. These data, originally collected as part of a study of the electoral process in the South conducted by the Bureau of Public Administration at the University of Alabama, were keypunched by ICPSR from Southern Primaries and Elections, 1920-1949 (University of Alabama Press, 1950), edited by Alexander Heard and Donald S. Strong. The machine-readable collection, which essentially replicates the information published in the Southern Primaries volume, includes returns for contests for governor, senator, and, occasionally president, and contains selected percentages as well as raw vote totals. While most primary election returns included were held for Democratic nominations, a few Republican primaries are also available. Several additional categories of data, such as returns for selected referenda and poll tax payments, are also included in the files as well.
