A French painter, Lucien, and his companion Maria, on vacation in Sicily, arrive in a port away from the tourist circuits. The beauty of the place and their meeting with an old penniless prince leads them to buy a rudimentary house on the edge of the cliff, despite the reluctance of Maria. Lucien is fascinated by the Sicilians, their country, their customs, their superstitions, their picturesque and surprising personality ... While Maria, impressed by the prejudices of the Italians of the North, considers them a barbaric population. She is revulsed by the severe education inflicted on girls contrasting with the laxity of boys, the "honor killings", the absence of women on the beaches, because of an unhealthy interest of men, baited by the Maria's fairness ...
