Goethe's residence in Weimar, which bears witness as much to the cult of Goethe as it does to Goethe himself, remains today the most-visited "poet's house" in Germany, and serves as a national symbol. This historical study of the Goethe House shows how it reflects German history of the 19th and 20th centuries, reveals parts of the building's past that are hidden from today's museum-goers, and examines the tradition--and failures--of memorial culture in Germany.
