All ethics depend both on rules and situations. With this assertion this distinguished theologian abandons the stormy debate between situational and traditional ethics. More fertile questions are probed in this major contribution to the field of Christian ethics: What are the theological grounds for co-operation on ethical and social matters between Christians and non-Christians in an age when Christians certainly cannot "go it alone". What relevance does a religious faith bear to a moral life? Is there a distinctive Christian ethic, or are the ends which Christians seek essentially the same as those of consciencious humanists, Buddhists, Marxists, etc.?
