Written while Fenelon served as tutor to the Dauphin of France, this prose epic in 24 books is full of moral and political lessons intended to instruct his royal pupil in the principles of statecraft and royal duty. Fénelon's Télémaque was the most frequently published book in France between 1699 and 1760, and widely read throughout Europe in the 18th century.
