37, [1] (blank). Signatures: A-E4. Bound in 19th-century
quarter vellum, with golden spine and green lettering panel. Manuscript “8” on p.
[38]. First edition, first issue, by the former curate to John Gauden – 48
years earlier – who fully endorses Gauden’s authorship claims of the Eikon
Basilike, or ‘the King’s Book’ of the deposed and martyred Charles I. The Eikon
Basilike had 64 editions or discrete issues recorded in 1649 alone, and a
controversial literature (mainly regarding the true authorship, probably that
of Bishop John Gauden) extending to our own day. See F. Madan, Books in
manuscript: a short introduction to their study and use, with a chapter on
records. London, 1893, 167; D. Wing (ed.), Short-title Catalogue of Books
