Pintura europea y cubana

Pintura europea y cubana
About this book
"This publication is the third of a trilogy of exhibitions undertaken by Spain's Fundación Cultural MAPFRE Vida, highlighting the holdings of the Museo Nacional de Cuba. The other two are Pintura Española del Siglo XIX del Museo de Bellas Artes de La Habana (1995) and Eugenio Lucas Velázquez en La Habana (see item #bi 99008439#). The commentary by Calvo Serraller points out the encyclopedic character of the museum, which includes a variety of European schools as well as a number of Cuban artists trained in the academic tradition. The broad scope may explain the unevenness of the collection, although there are some exceptional pieces by artists such as Corot, Daubigny, José de Ribera, Francesco Guardi, and a number of German and English portraits of great quality including two by George Romney. Olga López Núñez wrote the essay related to colonial painting in Cuba. María del Carmen Rippe Moro and Miguel Luis Núñez Gutiérrez provide a brief history of the museum. Good color reproductions"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.
