Perkins, a veteran cattle industry journalist, wrote a short history of the Winchester rifle and its utility to the law enforcement division of the nation's largest livestock organization, Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. TSCRA's field inspectors, also known as range detectives, have placed themselves in dangerous positions throughout history in protecting ranchers' cattle against theft. The book focuses on the murder of two range detectives in West Texas in the early 1900s by suspects in a cattle theft case. The book also includes a short history of brands belonging to historic Texas ranches.
