Since the Middle Ages, sgraffito decorations have shaped the image of European and North African cities. What they have in common is that they adorn almost exclusively facades, to the reception by the citizens in the urban space. This led not least to the fact that they often served as a sign of the social status or the conviction of their clients and were used as a carrier of various messages to propaganda. In this conference publication for the first time experts from Europe and Israel to the diversity of their materials, techniques, topics, conservation problems and restorations since the Middle Ages. Some contributions of the basic work deal with the varied brushwood decorations of the 20th century.
