Unlike other studies of the Grand Tour, this book deals not so much with the fully-fledged 18th-century phenomenon, but rather with the 16th and 17th centuries and the way in which the English became conscious of the Italian Renaissance and thereby discovered classical antiquity itself. Revised essays document the lives and travels of the personalities who contributed to establishing a convention which eventually came to dominate European culture.
