Paul Jennings was a slave owned by James Madison. His freedom was bought by Daniel Webster from Dolley Madison in March of 1847. His 1865 account of Madison is considered the first memoir about life in the White House. Jennings died in May 1874. This book has been digitally restored from an archival copy of the original 1865 edition. Standish Press Authorized Open Library Edition.
