La obra integra una iconografía completa de México: las tradiciones populares - las que se han perdido, las que están a punto de desaparecer y las sobrevivierntes - los movimientos sociales y la cultura, a través de fotografías, seleccionadas por Déborah Holtz, así como recuerdos y lecturas de Monsiváis. El cronista evoca los momentos decisivos y cotidianos de la nación. Se trata, en síntesis, de una historia del mundo imaginario y vivencial de los mexicanos desde la Colonia hasta nuestros días.
