Wirikuta
Wirikuta
About this book
A portfolio about the incursion of mining interests (First Majestic Silver) into the scared Wirikuta lands of the Huichol peoples. The process of silver extraction trangresses the laws and covenants that protect native peoples, and presents a threat to the environment balance and health of the area. The Escuela de Cultura Popular joins people and organizations around the world in trying to raise awareness of this desecration of sacred lands and catalyze an ethical alternative to mining. Five elder artists from the Escuela each chose 5 artists to participate, and all 30 artists made a print concerning the current Wirikuta controversy. The accompanying DVD-R contains photos of the artwork, the artists and a Wirikuta pilgrimage. The accompanying CD-ROM contains PDF files of the 5 Spanish texts and translations into English and French.
