About this book

"The book is focused on Zlatostruy, a collection of Chrysostom's and Pseudo-Chrysostom's homilies, selected and translated at the beginning of the 10th century in the city of Preslav, capital of the Bulgarian kingdom at the time. The ancient preface, which gives the collection its name, reveals that the Bulgarian tsar Symeon (893-927) himself conceived and inspired the undertaking of the translation and selected the texts. The present study describes and comments the linguistic features of the Greek original and the Old Church Slavonic (Old Bulgarian) translation. It examines consecutively the homilies 1-45 of the Longer collection (L), juxtaposes it to the other varieties of Zlatostruy (the so called Shorter and Hilandar collections, S and H) and puts it in the wider context of the Preslav literary school. The linguistic analyses of the texts are based on some general theoretical principles and they use a universal matrix, thus allowing the texts to be compared and classified in groups"--Summary (page 448).
