Pontus Hulten, founder-director of the German Kunst-und Ausstellungshalle, marks out a broad field for Modernism in an unconventional way in this volume, and calls it Terrirorium Artis. He launches a broad span from Rodin to contemporary artists, without putting the personality of the artist in the centre, or dealing with trends, styles and developments. Instead he directs his attention towards pioneering individual works that were violently rejected by critics at the time they originated as not having anything to do with art, but later turned out to have been the works that had the greatest intellectual and spiritual explosive force.
