Diners of the North Shore

Gary L. Thomas

About this book

This book looks at the history of diners of Boston's North Shore area, (Essex County), from the horse drawn lunch carts of the early 1890s to the sleek stainless steel clad roadside eateries most people are familiar with. This area's large manufacturing districts provided a hungry workforce looking to grab a quick meal at a reasonable price and this evolved to more remote roadside areas later. Many rare images of both the well known eateries still in operation as well as others that have been gone for many decades. Several North Shore manufacturers of diners are also profiled. This book is the result of a a seven year effort to document the existence of every lunch cart and diner to have operated in Essex County 1890-1960.
