Patrick "Shep" Shepherd, a promising major league baseball pitcher before 9/11 who left his family to enlist in the US Armed Forces, manages to obtain the vaccine that could save the wife and child he abandoned when a scientist, who believes she has been "chosen" to bring about the end of the world, infects herself with a fast-acting version of the Black Death while in Manhattan.
