Young Allan McGregor's clan has fallen on somewhat harder times than of old, and an infusion of capital would be very welcome to restore the castle and lands to their proper level. All this comes to pass when they are introduced to sailing and boat building by a highly competent seamen who also happens to be a faithful adjunct to the castle's somewhat diminished staff. He starts off young Alan and his chums with building a small cutter; and after they have mastered sailing on the loch, they manage to acquire a large topsail schooner in which they voyage to the lower Arctic. Their hunting and trapping provide the capital they need and their return home is both triumphant and rewarding to the clan.
