Vol. 1: Discusses the northern environment and the origins of the first people to the Far North in Eurasia, particularly Alaska and Siberia. Examines the realms of myth and fantasy as well as science in man's progress to colonize new, remote regions. Reviews perceptions of the north in Greco-Roman culture, later prehistoric Europe, and the Middle Ages; the discoveries of the Renaissance; and modern scientific inquiry. Discusses techniques for recovering material evidence for human occupation. Vol. 2: Examines life in the Far North of Eurasia during the ecological upheavals of the end of the Pleistocene and beginning of the Holocene when prehistoric men managed to adapt themselves to the most extreme conditions and contributed to the great evolution of human cultures.
