The young life of Susannah McKay Campbell has been painted with layers of hatred and tragedy. As political outcasts, she and her husband, James, fled Carolina for the Kentucky wilderness, only to encounter there the rage of native Indians. As a widow, and then a grieving mother devastated by the death of her unborn baby, Susannah, part Indian herself, withstands further ostracism because of her appearance. Proud, beautiful, and courageous, Susannah determines to leave Kentucky forever. Now on a flatboat bound for freedom, Susannah's seemingly endless supply of strength is about to run dry.
