An outstanding collection of archival photographs documenting early exploration, transportation, and settlement, Waiting for the Light examines mountain photography from a unique perspective. Early photographers in Canada’s western ranges faced almost overwhelming odds in their quest for images, and yet managed to create an immense body of remarkable work. From this, Brock Silversides has distilled 200 fascinating archival images that highlight the various stages of mountain photography, from the first forays into the region to the building of the railways and the development of communities and roads. Waiting for the Light examines, for the first time, the challenges and hardships these early photographers faced, the adventures they had exploring new places in their search for unique views, and the exceptional photographic record they produced.
